2025 Road Safety Debate Competition

The 2025 edition of the Road Safety Debate Competition was successfully held on 8–9 October at Tshwane House in Pretoria.

This national event brought together top young debaters from all nine provinces of South Africa. It followed the United Nations Assembly model, with participants passionately advocating for safer roads and responsible road-user behaviour.

Over the two days, debaters showcased critical thinking, persuasive communication, and a deep awareness of current road safety challenges facing communities nationwide.

Three learners from De Aar High School represented the Northern Cape: Luniko Qondani, Llené Festus, and Faith Pieterse. They competed in the urban category, debating the motion:

“The country’s road safety strategy adequately advocates pedestrian safety.”

Although the Northern Cape team did not secure a spot in the top three, the competition was fierce, with Limpopo and Mpumalanga tying for first place and KwaZulu-Natal finishing third.

We extend our gratitude to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, Mr L. Manona from the Department of Education, the provincial coaches, and all the dedicated debaters for their passion and commitment to youth development and safer communities.
